Berlin – More than just history.

As you would expect from the capital of Germany, Berlin is a huge city, and within its districts there are many things to keep us tourists busy!

The history of Berlin is well known and any visit wouldn’t be complete without viewing the remains of the Berlin wall and the Brandenburg Gate, an instant reminder of Germany’s checkered past, but also a strong symbol of reunification in modern day Germany. Those looking for a cultural experience would also appreciate the Reichstag, the home of German Parliament, and its modern façade thanks to the recently added dome atop.

As a younger tourist I wanted to look at the other side of Berlin, whilst you can’t help but get caught up in the history of the place…and its very interesting to do so, modern Berlin has even more to offer. Whether visiting for a summer holiday, work, study, or on a budget city break there is plenty to keep you entertained. And if, as I was, you’re a bit conscious of the bank balance when heading over, then not to worry, there are plenty of affordable rooms in Berlin, and your sure to find something to suit your budget.

My personal recommendations are:

• Grunewald – If you’re visiting in the warmer months it is definitely worth a trip here; a large forested area great for exploring or a peaceful romantic picnic. And if you a fancy a dip there are several fresh water lakes to dive into. And best of all it’s Free!

• Nightlife – Berlin is a hive of cool restaurants, bars & clubs. It really does offer something for everyone, whether looking for a crazy night on the town, or a nice meal and a chilled evening. It is evolving into legendary nightlife status, with all music and styles catered for. Although sometimes difficult to navigate, if you get your bearings quickly and head towards Mitte district or City West areas your sure to find a restaurant to suit your style, Warcschauer Straße and Boxhagener Platz provide the bars, then your sure to stumble upon one of the 200+ clubs in the city soon enough; Week-end, King Kong Klub and Watergate are some of the safe bets (cheap entry too).

• Zoo – Berin Zoo is definitely worth a visit for you animal lovers; it has the widest range of species in the world so you are sure to find something you haven’t seen before.

• The best way to view the city in my opinion is by bike. If you’re a cycling enthusiast then it is certainly worth hiring a bike and doing some exploring of your own. There is a vast network of cycle lanes and it really is a pleasant way to view the major sights.

• The Badeschiff – Again if you are about in the hotter months this is the best way to cool off. The “bathing ship” is a floating public swimming pool located on the river Spree. Worth a visit in the evening too when local DJ’s set up their decks and get the party started.

Whatever your preferences or reasons for visiting this intriguing city you certainly won’t struggle to keep yourself entertained. The city successfully combines history and culture with a modern, stylish feel and really caters for the masses. Enjoy!
